About Me

I am Kaivan Harouni, managing attorney and owner of the Harouni Law Group. I became an attorney to be a consumer advocate, especially in the field of real estate. Helping tenants fight their unscrupulous landlords allows me to achieve both of my goals, as does my other specialty where I sue lenders to stop foreclosure sales and save people’s homes.

The idea to help tenants in California get their security deposit back came to me when every single one of my landlords tried to retain my security deposit with little or no explanation. I asked around and it seemed like everyone else’s landlords were also retaining their security deposits with little or no explanation.

I contacted some real estate attorneys to determine what my rights were but they wanted to charge me $250 per hour. By the time they met with me, researched my situation, advised me, and drafted a custom demand letter for me, I would owe them between $1000 - $2000. It became clear to me then that the reason why landlords were stealing everyone’s security deposit was because most tenants could either not afford an attorney or, even if they could, it was not worth the cost of the attorney to get back their security deposit.

I did my own research into security deposit law and saw that it was quite complicated. After unraveling it in my own mind, I started pushing back whenever landlords wanted to take my security deposit. To my surprise, most of them immediately returned my security deposit once I told them what laws they were violating because they did not know the law themselves. Some of them knew that they were violating the law but returned my security deposit once they realized that I knew my rights and was willing to fight for them.

There was one landlord, however, that would not return my security deposit even though I explained in detail all the laws she was violating and how she was violating them. She only retained $500 of our $2500 security deposit, but getting back my $500 was a matter of principal to me because I knew that I was right. I took her to small claims court and, to my and my wife’s surprise, we won $5000!

I knew that I was onto something, and wanted the masses throughout California, even those fighting for just a few hundred dollars, to have access to quick, easy, affordable, and effective legal help in fighting their landlords. Nobody should have to lose any amount of money just because they don’t know the law.

That is when I came up with the idea of making this website. By spending $99 and about 20 minutes of your time answering a series of yes/no questions, you will have a customized demand letter and all the knowledge you will need to fight for yourself. I look forward to leveling the playing field for good people like you.
